Bio:

Emerson Pierce Hollingsworth, last scion of the Salem Hollingsworths, seemed destined for great things. The New England literary community met his first short story, “The Wind and the Sun,” with great acclaim, and there were rumours of novel in progress. However, in 1914 he left his graduate studies at Harvard for Canada with the intention of joining the war effort. He did not have a good war. He never speaks of what he experienced there, but it left him brooding and melancholy. He stayed in Europe, traveling between London, Paris, and Rome, but was forced to return home when his father, furious at what he saw as dilettantism, threatened to cut him out of his will. Emerson returned stateside but and decided to head west, but made it only as far as Chicago before falling into a alcoholic fugue. Months later he emerged, somehow the owner of an antiquarian book store. There are stories that he is at work at a new novel about his war experience. However, there are other—and probably more accurate—rumours that he never makes progress on it, instead writing the same sentence over and over again.
